The expansion of the canvas: Monumental painting in an architectural context
Monumental painting places the highest technical demands on the contemporary realist. It requires overcoming the laws of statics and perspective through the medium of color. Drew Camell utilizes the tradition of Baroque illusionism (trompe-l'œil) not only to decorate spaces but also to conceptually open them up.
Each project is a site-specific response to the architecture. From the initial sketch to the final execution in the style of the Old Masters, the focus is on the harmony between space, light, and narrative depth. It is the symbiosis of craftsmanship and artistic vision that elevates the space to a total work of art.
